Not long ago I came across a document that referred to future roadwork that would turn Capital Boulevard from a roadway to a highway. Huh?
I spoke with NCDOT and it is true. Funding has been set aside for the widening of Capital Boulevard and the improvement of key intersections. The project is not scheduled to start for another six to eight years and by that time we will be begging for more road capacity.
NCDOT said, “According to the Design Engineer, they will look at accommodating an extension of Triangle Town Boulevard with a grade separation over Capital Blvd that ties into Gresham Lake Road. Gresham Lake Road will likely not have access to Capital Blvd. They will review the intersections at Perry Creek Road, Burlington Mill Road and US 1A (Main Street). Finally, they do not anticipate any driveway access or at-grade intersections on this project.”
Maybe those will be changed to over-under intersections. Sweet!
It would be fantastic to have a new and better intersection at Main Street.
The project, U-5307, can be seen in the map below leading up to Wake Forest from 540.
The funding for this project widens U.S. 1, Capital Boulevard, up to NC 98 but the future expansion may extend up to Bert Winston Road and demand increases. That area is part of the study area. More can be found at http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/us1corridor/.
