Wake Forest Station 5 Responds to I-540 Accident

This evening Wake Forest Fire Department responded with a number of other fire departments including City of Raleigh, Bay Leaf and Durham Highway to an unfortunate accident on I-540 just after Six Forks Road and just before the exit for Falls of Neuse Road.

It appears a couple in the orange Dodge Charger had run out of fuel and was pulled over just on the right hand shoulder at the end of the merge lane. Witnesses reported the man was filling the Charger from a gas can on the driver side of the car when an older gentleman struck the Dodge Charger from behind at speed, failing to see the lane he was in ended and merged to the left.

WRAL reports we lost a Wake Forest resident in the accident. Lauren Ann Gervig, 25, from Wake Forest is reported to sadly have been reported dead at the scene.

Wake Forest Station 5 responded to the call and was there as the victims were extracted and taken for emergency care at WakeMed.

The driver of the vehicle merging onto I-540 has been charged with midsemeanor death by vehicle. Investigators said alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.
