Police: Man assaulted Raleigh woman, stole her car

— Raleigh police are searching for a man who they said assaulted and robbed a handicapped woman last month.

Police have charged Stanley Demon Dowd, 37, with attempted murder, first-degree burglary, common law robbery, assault on a handicapped person, assault by strangling and motor vehicle theft.

Police said that in the early morning hours of Nov. 26, a 68-year-old woman who had befriended Dowd woke to find him standing over her in her home in the 4800 block of Walden Court. Dowd strangled the woman and physically assaulted her before stealing several items, including a credit card, and fleeing in the victim’s car, said police.

The stolen vehicle is described as a silver 2003 Toyota Corolla with North Carolina license plate XZP 2712.
