N.C. National Guard solider killed in crash with sheriff’s deputies

— One National Guard solider was killed and another injured Saturday night after the men were involved in a crash with two Scotland County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Highway Patrol troopers said that a vehicle occupied by the two soldiers ran a stop sign on N.C. Highway 144 in Laurel Hill and struck a Scotland County Sheriff’s Office vehicle head-on.

The solider sitting in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle, Andre Nelson, 22, of Lumberton, was killed. Authorities said they believe Nelson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The other soldier and driver of the vehicle was identified as Rasheed McLain, 24, of Fayetteville. He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said that charges against McLain were pending Sunday night.

The two sheriff’s deputies were taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries and were released.
