Police: Wilmington student found with gun, hatchet and knife in car

— Authorities say a 17-year-old high school student in Wilmington has been arrested after deputies found a gun, knife and hatchet in his vehicle on campus.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer told media outlets that an assistant principal at Laney High School found three students smoking marijuana in the parking lot.

Brewer says those students led deputies to a fourth teen. When officers searched his vehicle, authorities say they found a loaded shotgun, a knife and a hatchet as well as more drugs.

The teen faces several drug and weapons charges.

School officials say there was never a danger to students because the weapons were all in the student’s vehicle.
