Rocky Mount, N.C. — The North Carolina Wesleyan College community Tuesday honored the memory of four freshmen who died in a crash in front of the school on Monday.
A memorial service Tuesday afternoon celebrated the lives of Donesha Scott, 19, of Raleigh, Robyne St. Claire Barnes, 20, of Conway, Kandis McBride-Jones, 20, of Littleton, and Quedeshia Brown, 20, of Henderson, who were killed in the crash on North Wesleyan Boulevard around 8:30 p.m.
Officials said all four women were first-year students at N.C. Wesleyan.
“I knew all of them well. I had the opportunity to get to know them,” said Darryl Hamilton, a senior at N.C. Wesleyan. “[They] always had a kind word to say, even to strangers on this campus.”
The driver of the second car—David Lee Pit—was taken to UNC Nash Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said the vehicle the students were traveling in turned into head-on traffic, and Pit ran into it broadside. Stone said he doesn’t expect to file any charges in the case.
School officials said the four students were traveling back to their dorm from dinner when the crash occurred.
“I think it [the memorial service] showed them we value their children. I am a father; I have lost a child,” said N.C. Wesleyan College President Dewey Clark. “I know what this is like.”
