86-year-old drowns while fishing in Orange County

The body of an 86-year-old man who had been missing since Monday evening was pulled from an Orange County pond Tuesday afternoon.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a pond near N.C. Highway 54 and Gold Min Loop Road Tuesday afternoon and found the body of an unidentified man who had drowned within the previous 24 hours.

Authorities said that family members last heard from the victim Monday evening, when he said he was going fishing. The family became concerned when they could not reach him Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said.

A fishing rod and other tackle were located near the body.

The sheriff’s office believes the drowning was accidental, but said the investigation is ongoing.
