Wake teacher faces student sex charges in Durham

— A Wake County teacher was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexual offenses involving a 14-year-old student in Durham, police said.

Troy Logan Pickens, 26, of 6620 Lake Hill Road in Raleigh, was charged with statutory rape, committing a sexual offense involving a student and taking indecent liberties with a child. He was arrested in Rockingham by members of the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force.

The alleged incident occurred in February 2015 while Pickens was teaching at Neal Middle School in Durham, police said.

Durham Public Schools officials said Pickens resigned in March 2015, two days after he was suspended after a student alleged he has touched her inappropriately.

A former Neal Middle student recently alleged “a serious concern” about Pickens, which prompted the investigation that led to the criminal charges, officials said in a statement.

Pickens has taught at Durant Road Middle School in Raleigh since July. He was suspended last week when Wake County Public School System officials learned of the Durham allegations, officials said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Durham police Investigator J. Sandoval at 919-560-4440, extension 29461.
