Douglas Ryal “Doug” Jones, 66, of Raleigh, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 after an extremely long and courageous battle with cancer.
A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 Monday, January 2, 2017 at Umstead Park United Church of Christ, 8208 Brownleigh Drive, Raleigh, NC 27617. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A burial will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park on Tuesday at 11:00.
A native of Raleigh, Doug was born January 5, 1950, the son of John Ryals Jones and Gracie Elizabeth Horton. He was a 1968 graduate and student body president of Millbrook High School and remained very close friends with many of his classmates. He was a star athlete in track as well as a defensive blocker on the football field.
He started his college career at Elon College where he played football on scholarship. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Campbell College in 1972. He also attended Southeastern Seminary School of Divinity.
Doug began working at Watkins Flowers with Ken and Rachel Watkins at the age of 14 and eventually purchased the business. Under Doug’s leadership, Watkins Flowers of Distinction became one of the most successful and well respected floral design businesses in Raleigh as well the southeastern United States. As a designer, as well as in life, he could see beauty and potential beauty in anyone and everything.
Doug was a charter member of Umstead Park United Church of Christ and remained active as long as his health allowed. Doug had a passion for the inclusiveness of progressive Christianity. He was instrumental in the fundraising and purchase of the UPUCC campus. He exemplified the teachings of Christ in his welcoming and affirming generosity.
Doug is survived by his devoted spouse, Sanford “Sandy” Peter Ceppos; his pride and joy- his son, Matthew “Matt” Christopher Jones and his wife Meredith Cottrell Jones; stepchildren, Karin Ceppos, Jaimie Francis and her husband Charles Francis, Sara Ceppos; his four grandchildren, Allison Francis, Avery Ceppos, Elliott Francis and Michael Jones; his brothers, William “Billy” Norwood Jones and his wife Betty, Dwight Hilliard Jones and his wife Connie, Tommie “Don” Donald Jones and his wife Debra. Uncle Doug was also exceptionally close with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
