Johnson: ‘Better Things Coming’ For Those Seeking Relief From Cold

7-Day Forecast

— One more cold night is on tap Monday before temperatures finally climb above freezing and continue to rise for the remainder of the week.

By Monday evening, the Triangle had experienced temperatures below freezing for more than 65 hours and temperatures will continue to be frigid overnight, with a forecast low of 15 degrees.

“We’re in for another bitterly cold night tonight. If it hadn’t been for the snow, cold temperatures would be what we were talking about,” said WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson.

Another night of below-freezing temperatures means that, once again, any snow and ice that melted on area roadways will refreeze overnight.

“Anything that has melted through the course of the day today becomes part of the pavement again overnight, especially off of the main roads,” Johnson said.

Residents will finally get some relief from the cold on Tuesday, when temperatures climb above freezing and into the 40s. Johnson said rain is possible overnight Tuesday, but the warmer temperatures mean there will be no further risk of snow or ice.

Temperatures are expected to continue climbing throughout the week, with a forecast high in the 50s on Wednesday and in the 60s on Thursday. By Friday, the forecast high is 71 degrees.

“If you are suffering from lack of heat or you’re just sick of the cold weather, either way, we have a warming trend and better things coming for you,” Johnson said.

Temperatures will return to normal for this time of year over the weekend, with temperatures in the 50s.
