Filomena (Thelma) M. Martinelli Mandato Born June 12, 1929, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2017 at her home at The Lodge of Wake Forest with her husband and children by her side. Thelma was born in Masontown, WV, but moved with her family to Baltimore, MD, at a young age. After graduating from St. Michaels Business School, she worked at various clerical positions. On September 1, 1951, she married Joseph Anthony Mandato and together they raised 6 children.

In 1987, Joe and Thelma moved to Wake Forest, NC, where she worked at NC State University in the payroll and benefits department until her retirement in 2002. After retiring, she continued her passion for cooking, games, puzzles and Bingo. She especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends and most importantly her much-loved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 600 West Holding Avenue, Wake Forest, NC on Saturday, February 4th at 1 pm, a reception will follow in the school hall.

She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Joe; her children; Toni Mandato Moxley of Wake Forest, NC, John Mandato and wife, Cindy of Dagsboro, DE, Susan Erat and husband, Mike of Linthicum, MD, Joseph Mandato Jr. and wife, Lisa of Mt. Airy, MD, Jacqueline Finegan and husband, Patrick of Wake Forest, NC and Jeannette Fisher and husband, Todd of Fairfax, VA.; her grandchildren; John Mandato, Jr., Angela M. Moxley, Andrea Mandato, Jackie Bumiller and husband, Mark, Joseph Mandato III and wife, Alexandra, Philip Fisher and wife, Jessie, Jason Fisher, Andrew Finegan, Colton Fisher Michael Finegan, Emily Fisher and Jack Finegan; her beautiful great grandchildren; Braedon Welsh, Sofia Bilski, Mason and Jackson Bumiller; her in-laws, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Thelma was predeceased by her parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters and her beloved grandson, Erick Nolan.

The family would like to express their love and gratitude to our “family” at The Lodge of Wake Forest, Doctors Making House Calls, Leanne Minnick, extension of your home health caregivers Mellen and Theresa, and Transitions LifeCare Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27606 or to St. Catherine Building Fund.

The family will be present Friday, February 3rd from 6-8 pm at Bright Funeral Home, 405 South Main Street, Wake Forest, NC (919) 556-5811
