Wake Forest Looking for Free Underage Labor to Fill Vacancies

The Town of Wake Forest is accepting applications from area high school students who are interested in serving on the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) for the 2014-15 school year.

yabbadabbadoHere at the Wake Forest News we think it should be renamed to Youth Advisory Board Beginner Auxiliary, Demonstrating Awesome Boisterous Behavior and Action, Duty Outstanding Opportunities. That way it could be YABBA, DABBA, DOO. But then again that’s why we don’t organize these sorts of things. So we’ll have to stick with “The YAB Wants You.”

Applications are available in the town clerk’s office at town hall and online here. Completed applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. Friday, May 9, and should be mailed or delivered to Town Clerk Deeda Harris, Town of Wake Forest, 301 S. Brooks Street., Wake Forest, NC 27587.

Only high school students (grades 9-12) are eligible to serve on the YAB, including rising ninth graders. YAB members serve one-year terms but may be re-appointed.

The YAB is composed of between nine and 15 members. At least one can live outside the corporate town limits.

The YAB researches issues of importance to young people in the community, makes presentations about its findings to the board of commissioners, and holds informational and/or special events for area youth.

The YAB meets on the third Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Ground Floor Meeting Room at Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St. Applicants should plan to attend the YAB meeting on May 17 to introduce themselves and discuss their interest in serving on the board.

The board of commissioners will announce the official appointments to the YAB during its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 15.

The first meeting of the newly appointed YAB will be Saturday, Aug. 16, and the year for the YAB will coincide with the school year – August through July.

It actually sounds like a valuable way for the Town to get the feedback of high school students who want to serve and have opinions.
