January Sports Update

Heritage Basketball Teams Win Coveted John Wall Tournament

Both the Heritage men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams won the big at the South’s premiere holiday basketball tournament. Formerly known as The Glaxo, the famous Raleigh-based Holiday Invitational has been a tradition for 45 years now. Never before has a single school sent teams to the championship game of both the men’s and women’s brackets- let alone win it. The men’s team took down behemoth Garner 68-62 to win it all, and the women defeated nationally-ranked Millbrook 55-44 just hours earlier.

Heritage Men’s Team #1 in State, Wins Cap-8

It was a busy month for the Heritage High School Men’s Varsity Basketball team. After winning at The John Wall Holiday Invitational, the Huskies have not relented. They are an astounding 21-0 on the season and have been ranked the #1 team in North Carolina by MaxPreps. Moreover, Heritage has already clinched the Cap-8 with an 11-0 record in conference play. The Huskies have stood head and shoulders above the Cap-8, which is widely considered to be the best basketball conference in the state.

Wrestling Programs Finish Great Seasons

Both the Wake Forest and Heritage wrestling teams capped off their solid seasons last week as a team. In the News & Observer 17 county area rankings, Wake Forest finished #20 and Heritage finished #25. Both teams were one of just nine Wake County teams in the final rankings. Both programs will have wrestlers participate in individual regionals next weekend. In addition, Rolesville’s wrestling squad was ranked #19 by the N&O. They are currently competing in the state playoffs as a team.

Rolesville Swimming Teams Finish in 2nd Place

The Rolesville High Rams Men’s and Women’s swimming teams finished in 2nd place in the Greater Neuse River Conference championship. This is a very special accomplishment for a school that only opened in 2013. The accomplishments by the Rolesville swim teams are yet another example of the school’s athletic trajectory.

Wakefield Basketball Heading in Positive Direction

The Wakefield Varsity Men’s Basketball team is having a nice season under rookie head coach Garrett Stevens. The Wolverines have an 11-10 overall record this season. If they finish above .500, it would be the first time they did so in 4 years. Wakefield recently had a big conference victory over rival Wake Forest, who was 2nd in the Cap-8 at the time. The Wakefield Women’s team is also currently above .500 with a 10-9 record.

Wake Forest Football Team Getting Parade

This month, the town of Wake Forest announced that a parade will be held for the state champion Wake Forest Cougar football team. In December, the Cougars captured the title in a 29-0 dredging of Greensboro Page. The “Cougar Walk of Champions” will start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25. The parade will be held in Downtown Wake Forest.
