Do the Happy Dance to Show How Cool Wake Forest Is

I had this idea to celebrate Wake Forest and get Wake Forest area folks dancing the new Pharrell Williams song, Happy, in order to show the specialness of Wake Forest.

It looks like this is going to actually happen and you are invited to participate. People of all dancing abilities, or other crappy dancers like me, are asked to join in the fun.

Many people who have responded asked if they could bring their kids, of course.

I can only do this with your help and fearlessness to get out there and get Happy.

As far as VIPs go, the Mayor and Stony Hill Fire Department are in.

How to Participate

If you are willing to participate, shoot me an email at and be sure to stay tuned to the WFN Facebook page as well.

Participant details and messages are at the bottom of this post.

Wake Forest Rocks!

Here are some of the versions others have done.

Messages to Participants

The video shooting day will be Saturday, April 26.

[Verse 1:]
It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break
I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space
With the air, like I don’t care baby by the way

Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

[Verse 2:]
Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah,
Well, give me all you got, and don’t hold it back, yeah,
Well, I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine, yeah,
No offense to you, don’t waste your time
Here’s why

Hey, come on

Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
My level’s too high
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
I said (let me tell you now)
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
My level’s too high
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
I said

[Chorus 2x]

Hey, come on

Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down… my level’s too high…
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down, I said (let me tell you now)

[Chorus 2x]

Come on

Wake Forest Happy Dance – Last Update Before D Day Tomorrow

First off let me just say how awesome you are for agreeing to participate in the video. The current rough cut edit using the shots I already have is so wonderful and uplifting. I think everyone will love the finished video.

As if I needed to reinforce how imperfect I am at times I managed to send out the last shooting schedule and omit the 3 PM Joyner Park slot for kids going to school in the AM. Meet by the old log structures.

I’ve made arrangements and hired a wonderful off-duty Wake Forest Police Officer to help keep everyone safe.

We need to constantly stress safety, fun, energy, sunscreen, and hydration.

Cannizzaro’s Pizza is going to be offering a terrific lunch special and Sweeties down at the municipal parking lot near the end of the route, will be offering free water and popcorn.

I’ve got no idea how many people are going to show up tomorrow but rest assured I will get everyone in a shot that wants to participate.

Here is how it will work. We will organize people in some specific fashion for the next shot. Each person will get to be in at least one video segment. Once I let you know that shot is a wrap you are free to leave, visit local merchants and leave some money behind, or help volunteer. Oh yes, and you can ask me to redeem your hug I owe you for doing this.

The times to show up are up to you because you know your schedule better than anybody. Having to schedule and confirm people for individual time slots would require a level of administration I just have not had the hours for.

Feel free to show up at any point along the route.

I will be there by 9:30 AM to instruct volunteers. Read more about volunteers below. It’s a wonderful opportunity. You will receive no pay, get no bonus or benefit, and no community service hours. Did I oversell that? But I need your help.

1. Street art next to parking lot near The Cotton Company – 10:00 AM
2. Mural in background on The Cotton Company wall – 10:15 AM
3. Passing in front of and out of The Cotton Company – 10:30 AM
4. B&W Hardware front and inside shot – 10:45 AM
5. Inside For Old Times Sake – 11:00 AM
6. Inside White Street Brewing in front of tanks – 11:15 AM
7. Passing Shorty’s – 11:30 AM
8. Inside and coming out of Wake Forest Coffee – Noon
9. Passing NC General Store and down ramp to parking lot – 12:15 PM
10. Across parking lot – (Shot reserved for handicapped participants coming)
11. In front of Sweeties – 12:30 PM
12. Inside Sweeties – 12:30 PM
13. Jumping off ramp at old train depot – 12:45 PM
14. On railroad bridge with Seminary in background – 1:00 PM
15. On railroad bridge with aerial shot – 1:15 PM
16. Joyner Park near old log structures. – See more at

I’m going to need two groups of volunteers to meet me at 9:30 AM in the parking lot next to The Cotton Company. For helping out and doing this extra duty I will owe you a hug. That’s still all I got.

Volunteering does not mean you can’t be in the video. You’ll get your turn.

Volunteer Group 1: I need outgoing street producers to help distribute information and keep people informed as we go. You will also be responsible for lining up the people for the next shot. I’ll fill you in on how this will work on Saturday morning.

Volunteer Group 2: Safety people. I need some people to watch over the street as best as they can and keep people out of harms way. This group would need to move ahead and behind the shooting where people are most likely to be distracted by the music and video.

You will be able to identify me as the bald guy with the yellow press photographer shirt on and shooting the video.

The Standard Stuff:

As I said before, my goal of doing this Wake Forest News video is just to show the rest of the world how amazingly awesome and cool Wake Forest is in a very positive and energetic way.

I’ve updated the main page for this project with the lyrics to the song.

It is NOT required to learn them but we will need to have some people who do know them to lip synch in the video. So if you can, please consider learning them.

If you don’t have the music you can download the Pharrell Williams Happy song like I did from iTunes ($1.29) or on the video page is a bunch of different versions of Happy videos. You can play those to become very familiar with the music and how some people danced to the music. I’ve been listening to the song on repeat all day long. The side effect is I’m pretty darn happy right now.

Watch for the “take a break” timeout hand sign at 22 seconds into this video which is a feature part of the video.
