Now as super fast as the Wake Forest Fire Department gets to the scene, what I’m about to share is a very rare situation. This afternoon a call went out for EMS and the Wake Forest Fire Department and I happened to be closer than they were and arrived first.
The first thought that went through my mind as I pulled up and turned on my flashing lights at the white van off the road in the trees was “I can’t believe I beat them here.” The second thought was “Oh crap, I beat them here.”
What you will miss from this is all the things the very nice man said to me as I made sure he was not in distress before the first responders arrived. You’ll also find I didn’t take any pictures or do any of my reporting work till I knew the man was safe and under the care of the true professionals. Only then did I go for my camera.
But here is what I can share, it appears a disoriented man lost control of his work van and ran off Purnell Road and into the woods and lush foliage just before Horse Creek. An Orkin man was one of the first good samaritans on the scene and I think he was the one to call 911. Orkin is good for more than just killing pests, they save lives as well.
The driver was lucky the van didn’t roll into the ditch or hit the bridge rail, just ahead of it. The thick vines held the van from rolling on its right side.

Just make sure you don’t always get to fires before the fire dept. does. People start to talk. And the police will definitely want to talk. To you!
