Area residents are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Joyner Park Community Center on Friday, June 1, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place in the vicinity of the visitor parking lot at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road.
Construction of the 32,000 square-foot facility is expected to begin in early June. The Town awarded the construction contract to Barnhill Construction.
Designed to blend in with current Joyner Park structures and the natural habitat, the new facility will feature a walking track, gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, multi-purpose rooms, dance studio and kitchen.
Speakers at the groundbreaking event will include Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones and Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Director Ruben Wall. Renderings of the building will be on display and the ceremonial shoveling of dirt will occur. A reception with light refreshments will follow the brief ceremony.
A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the Joyner Park Community Center is expected to be completed in 2019. The total cost of the project is approximately $11.1 million.
