Traffic Alert – Stadium Drive

Town of Wake Forest News

Drivers should expect delays along Stadium Drive Monday, June 12, through Tuesday, June 26, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

Fred Smith Co., a private contractor working on behalf of the Town of Wake Forest, will alter normal traffic patterns along the portion of Stadium Drive from Glencoe Drive to North Avenue. Lane closures and traffic shifts are necessary to allow crews to relocate water utilities and install a storm drain as part of the Stadium Drive Complete Street Project.

Signage and flaggers will be in place to safely direct traffic flow through the work area. Delays are expected, so motorists are encouraged to take an alternate route if possible.

Drivers who regularly commute along Stadium Drive should expect delays until the project is completed. Motorists who travel through the area are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time or consider using an alternate route.

Extending from Capital Boulevard/US 1 to North Wingate Street, the Stadium Drive Complete Street Project is designed to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, as well as traffic flow. Once completed, the typical section of Stadium Drive will include three lanes with curb and gutter, left-turn lanes at intersections and driveways and a 10-feet wide multi-use path on the south side. Other features will include five-foot wide sidewalks on the north side, wide striped shoulders on each side of the roadway, a pedestrian refuge island, high visibility crosswalks and ramps, and accessible transit stops.

A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the Stadium Drive Complete Street Project is expected to be completed in 2020. The total cost of the project is approximately $7.3 million.

The Town of Wake Forest provides this information as a public service. Planned road closures and restrictions are necessary to allow for a variety of work. Motorists are encouraged to use the information to help plan their route and move safely through the work area. Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, town staff works with contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public.

When traveling through a construction area, drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are asked to be patient, proceed with caution, and obey signage and flaggers at all times. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers are also urged to double their following distances.
