Cassell William “Billy” Jones Jr – Obituary

Perhaps it is not a star, but rather an opening in Heaven, where the love of our lost ones shine down to let us know they are with us. My husband, our Daddy, our Papa, our father-in-law and our grandfather-in-law, Cassell William “Billy” Jones, Jr. died peacefully on August 21, 2018. To know him was to love him and want to emulate him. He never met a stranger, and he spent his life devoted to helping others. Our lives are forever enriched by the wonderful stories he told.

Billy was the adored, mischievous, freckle-faced son of Kathleen Poteat Jones and Cassell William Jones. He began his career in the family business, Jesse Jones Sausage Company, in Danville, VA. In 1967, the family and the company moved to Raleigh. Billy continued to work there for many happy years. Shortly after retiring, he began working with Ross/Deckard Architects, where he remained for 14 years as the firm’s indispensable right hand man. Billy loved his family more than life itself…but his beloved Tar Heels were a close second! He had season tickets to basketball and football games, and lived for the start of the seasons.

Billy is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 64 years, Shelby Marshall Jones; his son, Cassell William “Bill” Jones, III and his wife Gabi; his daughter, Kimberly Jones Ross and James M. Ross, II; grandchildren Cassell William Jones, IV, Jessie Ross and husband Dave, and Sasha Ross; sister Laura Ann Jones Brann; sister-in-law Bunny S. Loftis; brother-in-law Barry Randolph Marshall and wife Phyllis; brother-in-law Beverly Ray Marshall and wife Kay, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

A casual and joyous celebration of Billy’s life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 PM with a brief remembrance at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 989 Blue Bird Lane, Wake Forest, NC 27587. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tribute donations be made to Billy’s caregiver, who laughed, danced and sang with him the last years of his life and provided compassionate care for Billy and the family. Please make checks payable to Shelby M. Jones, c/o SECU, P.O. Box 610, Rolesville, NC 27571, memo line account #62309246.

Billy’s last days were spent peacefully, in a Carolina Blue room at Transitions Hospice Home, where he received such amazing care and compassion from their wonderful staff. He is now finally home in the place God prepared for him, eagerly awaiting the start of Carolina’s football season, with his beloved Mama and Daddy at his side. He’s a Tar Heel born, he’s a Tar Heel bred, GO HEELS!
