Traffic Alert – Ligon Mill Road

Work on the Ligon Mill Road Operational Improvements Project (LMROIP) will require a series of overnight road closures tonight (Monday, April 12) through Thursday, April 15. Fred Smith Company, a contractor working on behalf of the Town of Wake Forest, will close the portion of Ligon Mill Road from Brimfield Springs Lane to South Main Street/US 1A from 9 p.m.- 6 a.m. each evening. The contractor is starting work at 9 p.m. each evening to reduce the impact on travelers and make the work safer for crews.

Detour signage will be in place to manage traffic flow and safely direct motorists around the work area. Delays are expected, so motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and plan an alternate route.

The LMROIP consists of widening the existing narrow corridor from two lanes to a four-lane median-divided roadway with left-turn lanes, bike lanes, curb and gutter and extra-wide sidewalks. In addition, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and dedicated left, through and right-turn lanes will be installed at the existing intersection with South Main Street/US 1A.

These improvements are designed to significantly improve the mobility and safety of this corridor. Decorative stone retaining walls will also be installed to enhance the visual appearance of the area. Throughout the duration of the project, Ligon Mill Road will remain open for two-way traffic, but periodic closures will be necessary. All closures will occur outside of the peak travel periods, only occur weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will not be performed over holidays or holiday weekends. Motorists should expect periodic delays until the project is completed, but access will be maintained at all times to all adjacent businesses.

A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the LMROIP is expected to be completed in late 2021. The total cost of the project is approximately $6 million. For more information, contact Transportation Engineer Jonathan Jacobs at 919-435-9441 or [email protected]

The Town of Wake Forest has launched an interactive map that gives residents a user-friendly and convenient way to view local road closures and restrictions. Accessible under “Common Resources” on the homepage of the Town website, the Traffic Alerts Map allows visitors to point and click on current road and lane closures throughout Wake Forest. Motorists are encouraged to use the information to help plan their route and move safely through work areas.

Planned road closures and restrictions are necessary to allow for a variety of work. Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, town staff works with contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public.

When traveling through a construction area, drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are asked to be patient, proceed with caution, and obey flaggers. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers are also urged to double their following distances.
