Leon Powell Jr. – Obituary

Tribute

It is with great sadness that the family of Leon Max Powell Jr. announces his sudden and unexpected passing at his home, November 17 2021. Leon was born to Leon Max Powell Sr. and Margaret Faye Powell on September 3, 1954 in Erwin,NC. Leon’s roots were in North Carolina, however as a child he also lived in Maryland, Florida, and New York. As a teenager in Saugerties, NY, he attended Saugerties Senior High and went on to Paul Smiths College where he earned a Associates degree in Forestry. From there he also attended Sryacuse Universitiy where he earned his Bachelor’s of science and Forestry and Wildlife Management. After graduation he moved back to North Carolina where he pursued a career with Bell South Telecommunications, he was a dedicated employee for 31 years and  retired in 2009.  He was preceeded in death by his loving parents, Leon and Margaret. He is survived by his loving and doting wife of 27 years, Margarita Avalo Powell, and his three children Andrew Powell (Corrine), Lori Wiggins, and Jennifer Leonard (Caleb), and three grandsons Wyatt, Macon, and Tristan.

Leon was a resident of Youngsville, North Carolina for 41 years. He had a deep love and passion for all things nature. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and farmer. The great outdoors was his church, he lived and breathed to be outdoors as much as possible. Leon was also an avid botanist and had a serious green thumb. He could grow and cultivate anything. His deep love of all things avian was evident if you ever came to his house. He always had something in the incubator or roaming about the property. Leon contained a plethora of knowledge regarding all of his passions and was regularly reading and furthering his knowledge. He was an ardent Carolina Tar Heels fan. Leon was a loving husband, father, and “Pa”- he will be deeply missed.

Leon’s Memorial Service will be held at Bright Funeral Home located at 405 South Main Street Wake Forrest, NC on Sunday November 21st at 2pm.
