Can I Get My ITT Tech Student Loans Forgiven?

Question:

Dear Steve,

I attended ITT tech in 1995 but didn’t finish. I only attended for one year but still owe a federal student loan.

The IRS has taken my federal tax returns every year for my student loan. I have never worked in the field I was going to school for. I left because the school wanted me to get another loan for the following year.

Am I eligible for any loan forgiveness or payback program?

Loren

Answer:

Dear Loren,

If you did not previously submit a Borrower Defense to Repayment application with the Department of Education, , you should do so immediately.

As a result of a recent court case, people who submitted one previously will have all their federal student loans forgiven for ITT Technical Institute. See this post for more details.

Not only are the loans forgiven, but previous payments will also be refunded.

If you decided to not file for a Borrower Defense to Repayment Discharge then you should rehabilitate your student loans and get out of default to stop the tax refund intercept.

By the way, the easiest way to avoid the IRS intercepting tax refunds is not to get a refund.

Sincerely,
